As we begin wrapping up the year, ticking off the last of the to-do list and preparing for the holidays, this will be my last email for 2024. I hope you’ve found these newsletters helpful over the last few months. This has been a new challenge for me as I grow my business, but it’s one I’ve genuinely enjoyed tackling each week.
A few years ago, I took the leap from recruitment into the health and nutrition space, starting with health coaching and later completing a certificate in nutritional science. That journey led me to pursue my Clinical Nutritionist qualification, which I’ve just wrapped up after 18 months of study, clinic practice, and mentoring. It wasn’t always easy - juggling family life, study, and starting a business - but it’s been so worth it.
Before we all head off on our summer breaks, I want to leave you with some practical tips to help you navigate the holiday season. These aren’t about skipping the pudding or stressing about workouts - just small, manageable ideas to keep your nutrition, movement, sleep, and stress in check.
Nutrition: Think Consistency, Not Perfection.
Prioritise Protein at Every Meal: Holiday spreads often feature carb-heavy and sugary foods. Balance them with high-protein options like lamb, steak, chicken, salmon and seafood.
Mindful Indulgence: Love Cinnamon Oysters? (possibly a Southern thing?!?!) Enjoy them, but slow down and savour it. Try not to eat on the run, standing up or in front of a screen.
Exercise: Keep Moving Without Overthinking
Short Bursts of Activity: Don’t have time for the gym? A 15-minute brisk walk, a few sets of squats and push ups or a dip in the lake are all great options.
Get out into Nature: Check out the local walks around your summer holiday spots or grab a kayak and paddle across the lake.
Sleep: Recharge Amidst the Chaos
Stick to a Consistent Bedtime Routine : Even on late nights, try to have a consistent bedtime ritual - wash your face, read a book, or try some gentle stretching before bed.
Take Time out to Relax: Try and balance the holiday chaos with relaxing activities like reading. I have just finished 'Funny Story' by Emily Henry - perfect summer time reading.
Stress Management: Protect Your Peace
Set Boundaries: It’s okay to say no to events that drain you or to carve out some ‘me time’ amidst the holiday rush.
Breathe and Pause: When stress rises (think Xmas day hosting!) take 5 deep breaths or try a 1-minute mindfulness exercise to centre yourself
Wishing You a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season
Having spent some time living overseas, there is something special about summers in NZ. I hope you enjoy the holiday period and remember, balance isn’t about being perfect - it’s about making small, intentional choices that leave you feeling good.
See you next year with fresh tips, ideas, and inspiration for your health journey!
