How To Tackle The Summer BBQ Season

Summer BBQs and holiday gatherings are some of my favourite times of the year, but it can be tricky sticking to habits you have worked hard to create throughout the year. With a little planning, though, you can still enjoy the occasion and feel great too.

🌟 Focus on Good Quality Protein

BBQs are a perfect opportunity to load your plate with good quality, flavourful proteins like chicken, fish, or steak. These options will keep you fuller for longer and help you avoid unnecessary snacking.

Top Tip: Bring your own marinated meat or seafood to the BBQ - it ensures you’ll have a healthy option and adds your personal touch to the meal.  One of my favourite things to cook on the BBQ - butterflied chicken.

🥗 Salad Heaven

I love salads and my friends and family would say they are a trade mark of mine. I'm not talking boring lettuce, grated cheese, carrot and tomato (what I grew up on) - there are endless ways to create a satisfying and nutritious side dish.

- Add roasted cauliflower to salad greens

- I love pomegranate season and they make excellent salad toppers

- Drain and rinse a can of legumes (chick peas, cannellini beans), add some olive oil, your favourite spice and bake in the oven.  Add to your salads for some extra flavour and crunch

If you’re heading to someone else’s BBQ, offer to bring a salad. It’s a thoughtful contribution and gives you some control over what’s on the table.

🧀 Skip the Crackers

Cheese and crackers are everywhere this time of year, but crackers often add unnecessary carbs without much nutritional benefit. Instead:

  • Use salami slices or deli meats as your cracker.

  • Add a small piece of cheese on top.

  • Finish with a slice of cucumber or cherry tomato for crunch.

🍢 Veggie Power

Grilled veggies are a BBQ essential. They’re easy to prepare, taste amazing, and pair well with almost any protein. Spritz with some olive oil and add your favourite herb or spice to courgettes, mushrooms, capsicums, and asparagus.

Summer BBQs and holidays are about having a break and enjoying time with family and friends, not stressing over every bite. By focusing on what you can enjoy - like fresh,  seasonal food and good company - you’ll feel great while staying on track.
