Are These Common Nutrition Mistakes Holding You Back: Simple Shifts for Women Over 40

Navigating nutrition in your 40's and beyond can feel overwhelming. There's so much conflicting advice out there that it's easy to fall into habits that don’t work for you. Here are three of the most common nutrition mistakes I see - and some simple swaps to turn things around:

  • Skipping Protein at Meals

Protein isn’t just for athletes. As we age, our bodies need protein to maintain muscle, support metabolism, and keep energy levels steady.

    • Common mistake: Toast and jam for breakfast.

    • Simple swap: Add eggs, a protein packed smoothie or some Greek yogurt to your morning routine. Or check out the Raspberry Chia Pudding recipe coming up on my socials this week.

  • Focusing on Calories Over Nutrients

Counting calories might seem like the easiest way to manage weight, but it often misses the big picture. The quality of your food matters more.

    • Common mistake: Choosing low-calorie crackers or rice cakes.

    • Simple swap: Go for a 1/4 of an avocado or some cottage cheese on whole-grain toast for a nutrient-dense snack.

  • Snacking on "Healthy" Processed Foods

Foods marketed as “low fat” or “high protein” can still be packed with sugar or additives.

    • Common mistake: Grabbing a muesli bar or muffin on the go.

    • Simple swap: Try 2 boiled eggs, veggie sticks with hummus or cottage cheese, or an apple with some peanut butter instead.

Making small, consistent changes can have a big impact on how you feel. Start with one shift and see how your body responds. Remember, you don’t need to get it perfect - you just need to start.
