How many times have you heard conflicting advice about what you should or shouldn’t eat? It’s exhausting, right? For women over 40, it can feel like navigating a maze, especially with so much misinformation out there.
Today, I’m busting 5 of the most common nutrition myths I hear from female clients when we start working together - so you can finally stop second-guessing yourself and focus on what really works.
1. Carbs Are the Enemy
The truth? Not all carbs are created equal. Whole carbs like vegetables, oats, and quinoa are packed with nutrients, fibre, and energy to fuel your body. Cutting carbs completely can leave you tired, cranky, and craving the very foods you’re trying to avoid.
Instead: Focus on nutrient-dense, whole-food carbs and pair them with protein for balanced blood sugar.
2. You Should Eat Less as You Age
While it’s true that energy requirements reduce as we age, drastically cutting calories isn’t the answer. Eating too little can lead to fatigue, nutrient deficiencies, and stalled weight loss.
It’s not just about eating less - it’s about eating smarter. Protein keeps you fuller for longer, supports muscle retention, and boosts overall health as you age - so it is important to prioritise.
Instead: Focus on high-quality, nutrient-dense meals with plenty of protein, vegetables, and healthy fats.
3. Fat Makes You Fat
Healthy fats like those found in avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil are essential for hormone balance, brain function, and keeping you feeling full and satisfied. Cutting out fat can leave you feeling constantly hungry and unsatisfied.
Instead: Embrace healthy fats as part of a balanced diet - in moderation of course.
4. Snacking Is Bad
Snacking gets a bad rap, but it’s not snacking itself that is bad -it’s the type of snacks that matter. Reaching for a bag of chips or a sugar laden muesli bar isn’t ideal, but having some Greek yoghurt or a boiled egg or two can keep your energy steady and prevent overeating later.
Instead: Choose snacks that are high in protein to keep you fuelled between meals.
5. It’s Impossible to Lose Weight After 40
This myth is one of the most damaging - and it’s simply not true. Yes, hormonal and lifestyle changes can make weight loss slower, but with the right approach, it’s absolutely possible to lose weight and keep it off.
Instead: Focus on sustainable changes like eating whole foods, staying active, and getting a good nights sleep. Consistency always beats perfection.
Feeling overwhelmed by all the nutrition “rules” out there? It can be extremely confusing.
You don’t need to follow strict diets or give up the foods you love to feel amazing in your 40s and beyond. It’s about making choices that work for you.
